The Story Points
ACT 1
SET UP:
·
The colors will be complete de-saturated in the
first half.
BEGINNING ONE:
·
An elderly woman (mid 60’s), walks down a busy CITY
street carrying a hefty suitcase with her. She keeps bumping into people
passing by who seem to not take notice.
·
The way she moves through the crowd sets her
apart from the monotonous, almost marching of businessmen, teenagers, and
soccer moms all hooked up to their own devices (businessmen looking at blackberries,
teenagers playing on iPhones or hooked up to large headphones, and soccer moms
on their phones as they drag their children along).
·
The woman stops at a street corner or in front
of a shop and begins to set up a small display of her goods.
·
This option will allow the viewer to begin to
piece together her outsider status in this world.
BEGINNING TWO:
·
The woman is already setting up on the sidewalk
as the shot fades in.
·
She could be attempting to set up and the people
passing by might accidentally kick some her items as they are too engrossed in
their technology.
·
She scrambles to collect her goods as she sets
up.
·
This option is more economical.
BEGINNING THREE:
·
The woman is already set up and she just begins
performing when the film opens.
THEN:
·
The woman begins performing magic for the crowd
of people.
·
Her acts are more traditional, and are the only
colorful things in this world.
·
After an act goes unnoticed, its color fades.
·
After several tricks, the woman decides to do a
grand finale, which seemingly goes unnoticed as well.
·
Mid shot of woman as she begins to pack up,
defeated. She stops when she hears a small sound of clapping.
·
Cut to show a young girl in a raincoat cheering
the magician on. Her mom then comes into frame on her cell phone and yanks her
away.
·
The magician despairingly finishes packing up.
ACT TWO
·
The woman begins walking home.
·
It’s a montage shot, similar to Between Bears.
·
She moves her way through the crowd again, but
more downtrodden this time. (This will be good a contrast and show more of a
character arc if Beginning 1 is chosen, or will serve the same purpose of
showing how she interacts with people when not performing if Beginning 2 is
chosen.)
IDEA 1:
·
As she walks home, items from her suitcase keep
falling out little by little, draining whatever color is left from them.
IDEA 2:
·
The woman herself could be colorful at the
beginning, but losing all color as she walks home.
·
Either way, Act Two will show her journey home
and the effect that this world of self-centeredness has on the magician (and in
a way, creativity as well).
ACT THREE
·
The magician arrives home to seemingly normal,
albeit rundown house right outside city limits.
·
The world inside her home is 3-D and colorful.
·
As she passes the threshold, she turns 3-D but
remains de-saturated.
·
Magical things are going on in the house.
Creatures and flying things here and there.
·
There could be a Cinderella (I think) like
sequence, where, as the magician is walking to her big comfy chair, her pets
and things help her settle in by removing her jacket, scarf, starting a fire,
propping her pillows, etc.
·
She sits down and seems relaxed but her color
does not return.
OPTION 1:
·
She hears a knock at the door, gets up, and
looks through the peephole.
·
She opens the door to reveal the little girl.
She hands the magician one of her fallen props, which has turned back to full
color by the girl’s touch.
·
The woman takes it, and her color is restored.
·
She invites the girl in.
·
End
·
This option is somewhat poignant, but spoon
feeds the conclusion to the audience.
OPTION 2:
·
Through her window, the woman spots the little
girl sort of across the street, playing with one of the magicians’ props. She
gets the trick to work.
·
The magician smiles and color begins to ebb back
into her as the credits begin.
·
This option leaves the impression that the
magician only needed ONE person to be inspired for her arduous journey to the
city to be worth it.
